I wish that someone would have posted this before I ordered the LP. There is a misleading sticker on the front of the LP cover which indicates that a free voucher for an mp3 download is included. It is NOT. As explained on the Bobbie Gentry Facebook page different countries have different laws regarding digital downloads. All copies of this LP bound for the U.S. market do NOT include the free download. Amazon has NOT included a free AutoRip of the album either and you can''t even buy a digital version if you were so inclined.
Amazon should realize this and post the information that an mp3 voucher is not included, it will save on returns for missing items.
Otherwise, this is a great album and a must-have for a Bobbie Gentry fan.

I owe this amazing discovery to Tyler Mahan Coes’ Cocaine & Rhinestones fascinating podcast episode ‘CR004 Bobbie Gentry: Exit Stage Left’ (unnecessary explicit language, even so go listen, even so please come back Tyler!).
Everybody knows ‘Ode to Billy Joe’ (if you haven’t go and listen right now), I had no idea what came after, The Delta Sweete:

Coe: “My favorite track is the closer – a lush, looping piece called “Courtyard.” If you can’t tell, I highly recommend this album. Listen to the whole thing. You’ve never heard anything like it before. If it was put out as Bobbie’s third or fourth album, I think it could have been a hit.”

Tyler then played a piece of “Courtyard” and I was intrigued enough to stream the album. Coe described ‘Reunion’ but could not do it justice until I heard it all the way through. A ‘mashup’ of two completely different sounds blended perfectly, way ahead of its time (1968!). I was pretty sure I was buying this album.

I was a huge Moby fan back in the last century. I love the song he sampled in “Run On”. When I heard Bobby’s version “Sermon” I was hooked. I ran to buy this album. Imagine my surprise when I discovered a new ‘Deluxe Edition 2-LP’ was coming out August 1st. I immediately pre-ordered and counted the days (30).

(An important side note here: After my purchase I received notification from Amazon that I would get a free download of this album, I kept that tab open until August 1st and then the option was gone. I whined about it long enough Amazon gave me the ‘Deluxe Edition’ download for free. The album cover also promised a non-existent free download.)

The main difference between the CD and album (a must for my ear): The CD includes the original ‘mono’ versions. Here I must thank Andrew Batt who mastered the album and mixed the bonus tracks. Based on Andrew’s write up inside the album this appears to be his labor of love. Getting to hear the original’s vs. Batts’ remixes one can truly appreciate how he ‘brought out’ the fullness missing. A headphone listen is a must to differentiate.

My recommended listening order: The bonus ‘demo’ tracks (Side D) first, to fully appreciate just Bobby’s voice and guitar, then Side A & B, the full original album. Then for dessert enjoy Side C with a ‘kicked up’ ‘Mississippi Delta’ and a new demo release- ‘The Way I Do’, which is one of my favorites. Reminds me of Dolly Parton’s ‘Jolene’, in a good way.

They gave Bobby the keys to the candy store and she produced this, very close to a masterpiece, that spawned no hits. (I just love when I find some secret music I love and nobody knows about.)

Burt Bacharach meets ‘Swamp Music’ in a good, really good, way.

As a long time Amazon customer i finally felt compelled enough to write my first review. For fans of Bobbie Gentry who i''m assuming are more than familiar with her music, not much needs to said about the album,. What needs to be made perfectly clear to those who may be on the fence about buying this reissue is how much better ''''by far'''' it sounds than any version you may have heard, be it mono, or stereo. There''s so much more detail and overall balance to the sound on this two disc vinyl reissue, and the two are as quite and flat as one could expect. I must say it completely exceeded my expectations. Here''s hoping other Bobbie Gentry albums get the same treatment in the future. I think everyone involved on this project deserves a medal, or at least our support, BUY it.

Looking at the box and booklet lately, to compare, it doesn''t tell you...anyway, this nice new reissue of TDS is a great companion piece to the box and expands the album even more...love the Emma Peel/Diana Rigg-esque extra unreleased pics included not in the box either...and great new essay by curator Andrew Batt, love how much care and respect he is giving Bobbie''s unique glorious catalogue of artful music, unlike no one else...

This is the reissue of the year (so far) for me. The remix is sensationally alive ... while I’m glad to have the mono in this set, it pales next to the stunning remix. I can’t rave enough about this release.

Bobbie Gentry was not all "Ode to Billy Joe", but the essence of Southern Gothic runs through this suite ("Delta Sweete") of tunes ranging from the joys and tears of delta life. There''s churchy gospelly romps, raucous recollections of extended family gatherings, misplaced love not to be, forgiven infidelity, and dark foreboding painful secrets. Her voice, intonation and phrasing are superb. Her guitar is pedestrian but she''s supported by a fine crew of musicians. The mono mix is front and center narrowly focused, the stereo is a broader soundstage and more enveloping. Your. choice. The extra cuts are complimentary to the feel of the album, the unadorned solo tracks are extremely rewarding. This "early album really displays Bobbie''s remarkable talent; repeated listening yields additional pleasures. Check it out!

The CD and vinyl versions of this album arrived this morning (yes, I had to order both formats), and I’ve listened to the CD twice already. It is brilliant. I have always loved this album and whilst I thought the sound quality of “ The Delta Sweete” was wonderful when presented on “ The Girl From Chickasaw County “ boxset, this new stereo mix is through the roof! Bobbie’s voice is crystal clear and the instruments are really quite amazing, I’ve heard intricacies within the arrangements that I had never picked up on before ( and I’ve been listening to this album for maybe 50 years). The packaging is absolutely superb, particularly on the vinyl edition. Andrew Batt and UMC have done it again!! Thank you for giving us Bobbie Gentry fans another treasure.

Along with her final album "Patchwork" (1971), "The Delta Sweete" is Bobbie Gentry''s great masterpiece. A semi-autobiographical quasi-concept album, it features two of BG''s finest songs, the exquisite and sensual "Morning Glory" and the devastating "Courtyard". Thanks to Any Batt - the man behind the wonderful Gentry box set "The Girl From Chickasaw County" - this album gets the reissue treatment it so richly deserves: incredible sound, great bonus material, superb packaging and illuminating sleevenotes (and on the 2-LP vinyl version, the pressing is beautifully flat and quiet). Batt''s stereo emix - from the original multitracks – is revealing and improves on the original in detail, and the two previously unreleased tracks are both excellent. Throw in some demos and related unreleased tracks from the box set and you''ve got the perfect package. I bought both the CD AND vinyl versions - if you''re a Bobbie fan, you really need both. So, how about some more of these deluxe Gentry sets, nice people at Universal?

Just received the Delta Sweete CD today and after listening to the re-mixed Stereo Disc one and then the Mono mix disc two, I can only say that they should''ve left the original mix alone which is by far the best as far as the tonal balance and soundstage is concerned....Bobbie''s husky organic voice is much better portrayed on the Mono disc. The Stereo mix is brighter which is what some listeners hear as more detail, If anyone has a HiFi system to hear the difference then it is a no-brainer....NEVER trust re-masters, except maybe the 50th anniversary Beatles Re-masters...such as the Sgt.Peppers/The White album and Abbey Road.

I''ve been debating whether to splash out on this special release. However after listening again to Mercury Rev''s great The Delta Sweete Revisited on vinyl, I had to take the plunge. This Bobbie Gentry package is an excellent recording. The re-mixed first LP has been beautifully crafted and sounds amazing and the extra tracks on the second LP really are a welcome bonus (unlike some bonus tracks used to pad-out special editions). The one downside (as other reviewers have pointed out before) is that there was no download code. Not the end of the world as I really don''t like compressed music formats, but you should get what''s promised on the packaging.
